Dexter Tortoriello - HOUSES

"There's not a whole lot I can say about this song. It destroys me."

Houses

DEXTER Tortoriello and Megan Messina created their debut album All Night in a cabin in Papaikou, Hawaii with no plumbing or electricity - using solar power to keep their computer running and working by candlelight."The music comes from a place of love and ease," says Dexter, and one listen through the album will confirm this. Not a first time mix compiler, Dexter says: "I made Megan a CD of a bunch of songs that I put on before we would go to sleep, so it was technically a mix of songs she'd slept through. She likes it a lot."

COCOROSIE - Lyla

I bought La Maison de Mon Rêve when I was still in high school on the day it came out. It sat in my car for a few days unopened as I was waiting for the right time to listen to it. The time came after my senior prom - which I only attended for about 20 minutes before leaving. That night I drove my car as far as I could away from my town and parked on the side of the road next to a giant open field. I lay on the hood and listened to the album while the sun came up. Lyla came on in the earliest hours of the morning and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. It still is.

THE LORD DOG BIRD - The Shedding Path

I fell in love with this track last winter. I had bought my friend Erik Craig a round trip train ticket to come to Chicago from Salt Lake City for him to detox off heroin in my bedroom. I was listening to this song in a sideways ice storm while I waited for him at the station. It's really powerful.

NADA SURF - Blonde on Blonde

Nada Surf is not an incredible band, nor do they even have that many songs I like, but Blonde on Blonde is a truly great song. I really like songs that mention other songs/albums/artists.

DANIEL JOHNSTON - Blue Clouds

Daniel Johnston is one of my favourites and he really showcases his talent on this track. The songwriting is incredible and the production just makes the whole thing so pretty. His piano pieces have always been the best to me and this ranks right up at the top.

FRIGHTENED RABBIT - Who'd You Kill Now?

For such a short song, it manages to work its way into some sensitive places for me. The lyrics are really dark and beautiful, and I really wish it would last another 4 minutes.

MICAH P. HINSON - Drift Off to Sleep

I was somewhere in Northern California with Megan and Erik last year sometime and we'd been driving for about 14 hours. We stopped off at some motel for the night and Erik and I sat for a few hours in the car after Megan went in, listening to this song while talking shit and smoking cigarettes. It's not really much of a story when I write it out, but it was memorable.

Available on: Micah P. Hinson and the Opera Circuit
